Over 40% of Surveyed Funders Are Planning a Direct Response to Crisis in Haiti 1/22/10

Foundation Funding for Climate Change Reached Nearly $900 Million in 2008, Foundation Center Research Shows 12/3/09
As the 2009 Climate Conference in Copenhagen opens, the Foundation Center has prepared a new research advisory that examines foundation support for climate change. Climate Change: The U.S. Foundation Response finds that foundation funding to address issues related to global warming has grown rapidly, climbing from less than $100 million in 2000 to nearly $900 million in 2008.

Celebrity Giving Spotlighted in New Directory 11/9/09
The Foundation Center's new Celebrity Foundation Directory features profiles of more than 1,600 charitable foundations that have been established by well-known figures in business, sports, entertainment, politics, and other areas. Decline in 2009 Foundation Giving Steeper Than Anticipated, Survey Finds

Foundation giving will likely decline by more than 10 percent in 2009 according to survey findings released by the Foundation Center. Based on responses of close to 600 foundations, Foundations' Year-end Outlook for Giving and the Sector also finds that continued reductions are expected in 2010.

New Report Provides First Benchmark of Diversity at New York City Foundations and Nonprofits

New York City foundations and nonprofit organizations have racially diverse staffs — but this diversity decreases at higher levels of seniority, according to Benchmarking Diversity: A First Look at New York City Foundations and Nonprofits, released by Philanthropy New York and the Foundation Center. The study is the first of its kind in New York City and the nation to examine "both sides" of the equation — with survey data from 95 grantmaking foundations and 540 nonprofit organizations in the five boroughs.

Foundation Center Launches National Education Stimulus Initiative and Web Portal

Foundations for Education Excellence is a national initiative the Foundation Center is supporting to engage philanthropic institutions and education leaders in a unified, strategic drive to improve public education. The cornerstone of this initiative is a new online resource center, developed with a grant from the C.S. Mott Foundation and in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education (DOE), which will help education funders align their grantmaking with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds.

Foundation Giving Priorities Shift in Gulf Coast Hurricane Response, New Foundation Center Report Finds

Private and community foundations awarded an additional $125 million in grant support for recovery and rebuilding efforts from January 2007 to mid-2009, according to Giving in the Aftermath of the 2005 Gulf Coast Hurricanes: Profile of the Ongoing Foundation and Corporate Response (2007-2009). Economic and community development captured the largest dollar share, a shift from giving for human services in the immediate aftermath of the disaster.

Community foundations raised their giving by an estimated 6.7 percent in 2008 to a record $4.6 billion, according to the Center's new report, Key Facts on Community Foundations, 2009 ed. However, these foundations will undoubtedly have to reduce giving in 2009.

Foundation Center Partners With Grantmakers for Effective Organizations to Offer Members New Philanthropy In/SightTM Mapping Tool

Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO) will serve as the Center’s exclusive beta site for its new mapping tool, Philanthropy In/SightTM, leading up to the product's release later this spring. Philanthropy In/Sight is a next-generation mapping application that uses Google maps to plot the location of foundations and their grantees, providing grantmakers with tools to be more strategic and increase the impact of their grantmaking.

Corporate Foundation Giving Remained Flat in 2008, Foundation Center Report Shows; Declines Expected in 2009

Charitable giving by the nation's nearly 2,500 corporate foundations remained virtually unchanged in 2008, according to Key Facts on Corporate Foundations. Giving totaled an estimated $4.4 billion last year. Corporate foundation giving in 2009 will most certainly decline; 51 percent of corporate foundations responding to the Center's survey said they expect to reduce their giving this year.

More Than a Third of Family Foundations Are Either Uncertain About Lifespan or Expect to Spend Down, New Report Shows

While existing in perpetuity is the norm for the majority of family foundations, more than a third say they are currently undecided about lifespan or plan to limit their lifespan, according to the first large-scale study of family foundation lifespan plans, jointly released by the Foundation Center and the Council on Foundations. The report benchmarks the intentions, practices, and attitudes of nearly 1,100 family foundations active in 2008.

Close to Two-thirds of Foundations Expect to Reduce Their Grants in 2009

A new Foundation Center research advisory, Foundations Address the Impact of the Economic Crisis, examines how U.S. foundations are coping with the crisis, based on recent survey responses of more than 1,200 U.S. foundations. In addition to the expected reduction in giving, over half of the funders surveyed said that they will rely on more non-grantmaking activities in their support for nonprofits.
